At its vanguard is Danielle, a quadrupedal robot whose charm lies in her whimsical design: big, expressive eyes, soft, fuzzy ears, and a coat of cartoon lavender fur. She’s more than just a pretty face; Danielle is a sophisticated robot, and during a recent Zoom call with Dynamic Creatures co-founder Marc Theermann, she served as a tangible embodiment of the company’s vision, perched serenely behind him.

"Danielle is a robot we built on top of Boston Dynamics’ Spot platform," Theermann explained, referring to the globally recognized, agile robot dog developed by his former employer. Theermann, previously the chief strategy officer at Boston Dynamics, possesses a deep understanding of advanced robotics and the public’s perception of them. "People are excited about robots, but all these robots today look like they’re out of a sci-fi movie. In order to really be welcomed by humans, they need to be cute and cuddly. So, this is Danielle."

The rationale behind this design philosophy is rooted in human psychology. For robots to truly integrate into daily life beyond factories and dangerous environments, they must overcome the "uncanny valley" effect—the unsettling feeling humans experience when encountering robots or animated figures that appear almost, but not quite, human. By leaning into cartoonish, endearing aesthetics, Dynamic Creatures aims to foster immediate warmth and acceptance, rather than apprehension or fear. Even through the digital lens of Zoom, Danielle’s appeal is palpable. Her large, hooded purple eyes articulate movement, her mouth expresses subtle shifts, and her legs exhibit a gentle, lifelike posture, hinting at advanced motion capabilities beneath her plush exterior.

Danielle is one of two prototype companion robots that Theermann has been developing. The other, Hugo, is envisioned as a Tyrolean mountain troll, described as the "cutest imaginable yeti." While Hugo has only been seen in pictures, his concept further underscores the company’s commitment to crafting characters that evoke affection rather than alarm. Both Danielle and Hugo are internal experiments at Dynamic Creatures, the nascent startup Theermann co-founded with noted AI researcher Farbod Farshidian. Farshidian’s expertise in artificial intelligence is critical, promising to imbue these charming forms with intelligent, adaptive behaviors that move beyond simple animatronics. Dynamic Creatures marks a strategic spinout from Boston Dynamics, widely recognized as one of the most famous names in American robotics. The mission is clear and singularly focused: to create the cutest and most loveable robots imaginable. This specialized approach leverages Boston Dynamics’ foundational technology—specifically the robust and versatile Spot platform—while diverging significantly in its application and aesthetic. The fact that Boston Dynamics is a partner, albeit without equity, highlights a recognition of the potential in this market segment, and a willingness to support the innovative use of their technology.

Theermann acknowledges that this direction might seem "counterintuitive" when the prevailing current in the robotics industry is largely focused on industrial automation, logistics, and increasingly, humanoids designed for practical labor or assistance in structured environments. "But at Boston Dynamics, we had so much inbound of people saying: ‘Hey, can you come to my event? Can you come to FIFA? Can you come to our football game, and dance at the halftime show?’" This anecdotal evidence was a powerful indicator of an untapped market demand for robots that could entertain, engage, and delight.

During his tenure at Boston Dynamics, Theermann personally witnessed the public’s fascination with robots performing on grand stages, from America’s Got Talent to concerts with Katy Perry and The Rolling Stones. Spots even made a brief, memorable cameo in The Mandalorian, a significant moment for Theermann, a lifelong Star Wars fan. These high-profile appearances underscored a clear "pull from the market," demonstrating that "humans are super excited to interact more with robots" when presented in an appealing context. This enthusiasm stood in stark contrast to the company’s more traditional associations with the Pentagon and industrial applications, where their robots are valued for their ruggedness and utility in challenging environments. The recognition of this burgeoning entertainment and companion market served as the catalyst for Dynamic Creatures’ formation.

Theermann’s personal journey into robotics began in his childhood, growing up in Brügen, Germany. His earliest and most enduring robot memory is R2D2, arguably the most iconic companion robot in popular culture. With Dynamic Creatures, he is striving to make that dream of lovable, interactive companions a widespread reality, at a time when the broader robotics sector is experiencing unprecedented growth. The maturation of the AI boom has fueled a massive influx of capital into robotics and physical AI startups. Recent PitchBook data revealed a record-high $18.6 billion in funding during Q2 2026 alone, signaling robust investor confidence and rapid technological advancement in the sector. This figure represents a dramatic acceleration, indicating that the foundational technologies for advanced robotics are becoming more accessible and robust.

"It shows that the hurdles to build a robotics company are coming down," Theermann observed. While acknowledging that building a robotics company remains "not straightforward and it’s still capital intensive," he emphasized that it is "more possible than it was ten years ago." This increased feasibility is attributed to advancements in modular hardware components, more sophisticated and accessible AI development tools, improved sensor technology, and enhanced battery life, all of which lower the barrier to entry for innovative startups.

Dynamic Creatures aims to carve out a unique niche within this booming market. Theermann draws a parallel to theme park animatronics, which, while magical, are often static, "bolted to the ground, and they have a fixed program. They do one dance or one task." The vision for Dynamic Creatures is to transcend these limitations by "marrying all our expertise from Boston Dynamics with the field of animatronics to really bring characters to life." This means creating autonomous, dynamic characters that can move, interact, and adapt in ways traditional animatronics cannot. The ultimate goal is to become the go-to partner for "IP holders with a character that you want to bring to life," offering a new dimension of interactive engagement for beloved fictional creations.

The company’s name itself, Dynamic Creatures, is a thoughtful homage, drawing inspiration from both Boston Dynamics and Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. While Henson’s estate is not directly involved, and Boston Dynamics is a partner without equity, the reference to Henson is deeply significant. Theermann understands that while industrial humanoids often possess an alarming aesthetic, context is paramount. The handcrafted, surreal warmth and emotional resonance of Henson’s puppets and Muppets offer a powerful touchstone for conceptualizing the future of robots. Henson’s creations famously transcended their mechanical or fabric origins to become beloved characters, a philosophy Dynamic Creatures seeks to emulate.

"If you have a robot suddenly in your elementary school, theme park, or shopping mall, surely they should be looking different [from industrial humanoids]," Theermann asserted. "We’re going heavily cartoonish. And you won’t see a photorealistic robot from us, probably ever." This deliberate choice to eschew photorealism is a strategic decision to bypass the uncanny valley and cultivate immediate relatability and trust. It stands in stark contrast to prevailing trends in other major robotics markets, particularly China, which is widely considered a global leader in humanoid robotics, often focusing on increasingly human-like designs.

Despite differing aesthetic approaches, the overall market for robotics is undeniably booming. J.P. Morgan estimates that worldwide humanoid sales are projected to skyrocket from $2 billion in 2025 to an astounding $300 billion by 2035. This exponential growth underscores the immense potential for robots to move beyond niche industrial applications into broad consumer and public-facing roles. Factors driving this growth include advancements in artificial intelligence, improved navigation and manipulation capabilities, decreasing manufacturing costs, and a growing societal acceptance of automated companions and assistants.

Theermann’s vision for the future is ambitious yet grounded in observable trends. "Over the next five years, robots are going to walk into every aspect of our lives," he predicted. "First in universities, then in our work environments, and then in our daily lives." This progression suggests a phased integration, starting with controlled environments like educational institutions and workplaces, before becoming commonplace in homes and public spaces. Crucially, for this integration to be successful, the "form factor" must be "nailed," meaning the design and appearance must be inherently inviting and foster a desire for interaction. Dynamic Creatures believes that by creating robots that are undeniably cute, cuddly, and engaging, they are building "the robots that you’re looking for. These are actually the robots that you want." It’s a bold claim, but one that could redefine our relationship with the machines that will increasingly share our world.
