This condition, often referred to as the "red meat allergy," is typically triggered by the bite of a Lone Star tick. Once sensitized, individuals can experience life-threatening allergic reactions after consuming beef, pork, or dairy.

The NIH team was searching for monoclonal antibodies that could bind to alpha-gal molecules on the surface of malaria parasites to neutralize them. While the antibodies they identified were not particularly effective against malaria, the researchers discovered that they had a remarkable affinity for the alpha-gal allergens that cause the tick-borne syndrome.
