The dramatic reduction in river flow on the Danube is not merely an industrial concern; it is reshaping landscapes and revealing long-lost secrets. In Romania, the National Institute of Hydrology reports that the average river flow at the point where the Danube enters the country is typically 4,700 cubic meters per second in July. However, by Wednesday, this figure had plummeted to less than a third of that, standing at a mere 1,600 cubic meters per second. Projections indicate a further decline to 1,500 cubic meters per second by Tuesday. The Danube, stretching 2,857 kilometers (1,775 miles) through 19 countries, is a vital artery for trade, transportation, and life itself. Its upper basin flows from Germany to Bratislava, Slovakia; the middle basin extends from Bratislava to the Serbian-Romanian border; and the lower basin traverses Romania and Bulgaria before emptying into the Black Sea through the Danube Delta.
The receding waters have unearthed a trove of historical and natural artifacts. In Croatia, the remains of a sunken Hungarian cargo ship have reappeared from the depths. In Serbia, the submerged hulks of a German river flotilla from World War II have been exposed, serving as a poignant reminder of past conflicts. Perhaps one of the most extraordinary discoveries occurred in Ruse, a city in northeastern Bulgaria, where a resident found what experts identified as the skeletal remains of a mammoth. Among the unearthed artifacts were a lower jaw, two tusks, and possibly a mammoth rib, offering a glimpse into prehistoric life along the river.

The impact on shipping has been equally severe. Navigation has effectively ceased on the Danube in Bulgaria due to the low water levels. In a dramatic rescue operation earlier this week, border police had to evacuate 186 passengers from the river cruise ship Viking Ullur after it ran aground near Vidin, a city on the Bulgarian-Romanian border. The passengers faced dwindling supplies of food and water as the ship was unable to dock in Vidin, and a relief vessel called to assist could not navigate the shallow waters. Ivan Zhekov, head of river supervision at Bulgaria’s maritime administration agency, described the situation as unprecedented in his career, stating, "I have never heard of such low levels over the years. There has certainly not been a similar situation since 1990."
The crisis is not confined to the Danube. In Serbia, the Sava and Tisa rivers, both significant tributaries of the Danube, are also experiencing critically low water levels. Serbian hydrologist Dejan Vladiković attributes the severity of the situation not only to the current extreme heat but also to insufficient rainfall during the spring.
