Getting outside for just ten to fifteen minutes in the morning signals to your brain that the day has begun, suppressing melatonin and boosting cortisol to give you energy. This morning light exposure also helps regulate the timing of melatonin release later that evening, making it easier to fall asleep at a consistent hour.

The "one-hour rule" is another practical guideline for those looking to improve their sleep hygiene. While the body can tolerate occasional late nights—such as for a wedding or a special event—it struggles when it has to guess which "time zone" it is living in every day. Dr. Ali’s rule of thumb is to keep the variation between your earliest and latest wake-up times to within sixty minutes. If you wake up at 7 a.m. for work, try not to sleep past 8 a.m. on Saturday. If you are chronically sleep-deprived, a small amount of "catch-up" sleep is permissible, but sleeping until noon is likely to do more harm than good by inducing a state of social jet lag that will make Monday morning feel like a nightmare.

For shift workers or those with non-traditional schedules, the challenge is greater, but the principles remains the same. The goal is to create a "relative" consistency. This might involve using blackout curtains and high-quality eye masks to simulate darkness during the day and using bright light therapy lamps to simulate morning during their "wake" time. The objective is to provide the body with a predictable environment, even if that environment is inverted from the rest of society.

While we may not be able to control every aspect of our health, the simple act of setting a recurring alarm and sticking to it is one of the most powerful, low-cost interventions available for extending our lifespan and improving our quality of life.
